The Long Awaited Family Getaway to Ubud

Back in July we had the honour to have a little chat with the Powell family who were finally able to visit Bali after a number of times postponing their trip. Discover what they missed the most when they were not able to return to Bali for two years.

In July, our team had the honour to welcome the Powell Family to one of their favourite holiday destinations, Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana. Mr Powell and his family have been a part of the Tanah Gajah family for a long time and last month was their third visit.

Mr Powell has two young and energetic sons named Owen and his brother Wyatt.

One day during their six-night stay,  we saw the family having a lot of fun playing soccer against two of our butlers on the spacious lawn area in front of the lobby and we were very curious about how they managed to plan their holiday to Bali.

The next day, on a sunny morning, the family were kind enough to share their thoughts on how the pandemic affected their holidays in the past couple of years. We decided to invite Owen and Wyatt for a brief chat. Mom and Dad stood behind us to hear the story that their children shared.

Owen mentioned they were quite upset when they heard that they were not able to return to Asia for a holiday, especially when they had to keep on pushing back their holiday. We asked what they missed the most about Bali and Owen answered “The people”, Wyatt added, “and not being able to see the people we normally see every year was hard.”

The team at Tanah Gajah are very close to our return customers. Quite a lot of them stay in touch via social media platforms which they normally chat or communicate through from time to time to give each other updates about their lives.

“We are basically like a family with a lot of them [the staff] and not being able to see them for two years and the fact that we live so far away from them was pretty hard. Although we are still connected and get in touch with each other through social media, it’s just not the same as meeting them in person.” Owen explained.

They were very excited that finally in 2022 they were able to return to Tanah Gajah, a Resort by Hadiprana and be reunited with their Tanah Gajah family. We asked, “So now that you have returned to Tanah Gajah, have you noticed any changes within the property as well as Ubud or Bali in general?” Owen noticed the newly opened Panen Padi Lounge and the new Tempayan restaurant “well the property got redone. I heard there was an incident at the main restaurant during the pandemic and it got redone which was one of the main changes I have seen. It is pretty nice that we have two places where we can dine.”

“What were your favourite activities in the resort?” we asked.  “I like swimming, fishing and walking around the rice fields,” Wyatt said. He added, “Oh and we also have a soccer competition with the staff which was very fun!” Owen shared, “I like to walk around the rice fields because it’s just really pretty and going to the pool just to relax is always nice. We also watch the Kecak and fire dance even though we have seen it before. Because it’s always an interesting performance to watch and we don’t have stuff like that back home.”

Our last question to Owen and Wyatt was, “If you had a chance to come back to Bali again, do you have any thoughts on what we should change or keep in order to ensure that all of our guests are happy during their stay?” It was heartening when we heard Wyatt answer “Probably just do the same. Don’t change anything because everything is already pretty amazing.”

What the Powell family shared were just some of the thoughts of many guests who were not able to travel to Bali during the pandemic. From the little chat we had with our guests we can see that travelling is more complex than just going to a foreign place and going to all the popular tourist spots. Travelling helps you to improve your understanding of other cultures. Travelling makes you feel like an adventurer by doing new things out of your comfort zone. Travelling expands your social network, and finally travelling lets you create memories that last a lifetime.
